Launched in 1938, she was built to protect trade routes, escort convoys, and fight enemy cruisers with a powerful main battery of twelve 6-inch guns. Her war nearly ended early: in November 1939, she struck a German magnetic mine and was so badly damaged that repairs took almost three years. When she returned, Belfast was stronger than before, with improved armor, radar, anti-aircraft weapons, and a widened hull for better stability.
